Things you should know about Schoolies

 

Schoolies week is an exciting rite of passage for thousands of graduates, signalling freedom in the transition into adulthood! However, the event is also synonymous with reckless behaviour, including unsupervised alcohol and drug use. Each year the media bombards us with images of adolescents being intoxicated and arrested.

 If your child is under 18, or if you are 18+ and caught out, seek legal advice.

 Be aware of the fines below:

  • Possessing / consuming alcohol in a public place (U18) - $413 fine

  • Falsely representing yourself as over 18 years (U18) - $413 fine

  • Attending a licenced premises (U18) - $413 fine

  • Possessing / consuming liquor on a licenced premises (U18) - $413 fine

  • Possessing / using drugs (18+ and U18) – potential criminal proceedings

  • Supply of liquor to a minor in a public place (18+) - $1,102 fine


    Remember, if at any time police wish to question you in relation to an offence:

  • They must allow you to contact and arrange to have a support person present during questioning

  • You have the right to telephone and speak with a lawyer – this is strongly advised
