Ian helps business clients, especially those in the building and construction industry, by ensuring that:-
• They have the most appropriate business structures – for asset protection, tax and internal control and regulations
• Their personal assets are protected from risks, including business risks, as best as possible
• Succession plans are in place for the business (e.g. sale and exit plans)
• They have personal estate planning, including properly structured Wills and Powers of Attorney in place
• The legal process and documentation of their day to day businesses such as trading terms and contracts with business partners, suppliers, customers and employees are as effective as possible
• Their business disputes with others (especially building and construction cases) are resolved as fairly as possible, with the least stress and interruption, based on sound commercial considerations
Ian works closely with clients’ other advisors especially accountants and financial planners, to ensure a coordinated approach in the most effective overall result for his clients.
Ian’s wide range of experience of more than 20 years in private practice means he understands the business and personal private issues faced by small to medium sized enterprises and the people and families behind them.
He has a special interest in security of payments issues in the construction industry in Queensland and is a regular speaker at state and national conferences and seminars. Ian also acts for a number of industrial organisations and employer groups.
Career Summary:
After an early career in the Brisbane CBD with a large mid tier firm, Ian started with the firm in 1986. Ian is a founding partner of McKays (1988) and was the managing partner of the Brisbane office which he established in 1993.

• Admitted as a Solicitor to the High Court of Australia and the Supreme Courts
of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western
